For the past 13 years, Darren Herman, Operating Partner, Bain Capital Private Equity, has been running Silicon Alley Sports, a group of digital media entrepreneurs, executives, and investors who come together to network and play sports to raise money for various charities. The group has raised money for Charity Water, Robin Hood, Meals on Wheels, American Cancer Society, and many others.
Bain Capital Community Partnership signed on as a sponsor for the 2017 events. The first event of the year was the Silicon Alley Tennis Invitational held on July 12 at the prestigious Ardsley Country Club tennis courts.
The event was sold-out, and it brought together a great group of entrepreneurs, founders, digital media execs, venture and private equity folks, and ecosystem supporters. The 2017 winning team was Stuart Coleman from MDC Partners and Ben Kartzman from Spongecell.
Eric Butorac, former US #3 ranked doubles player and world ranked #6, also joined the event. Butorac has played successfully in the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open where he reached the quarter finals. He has 18 career titles in his 12 years as a pro and has played and won against Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Bob and Mike Bryan, and other premier players. Today, Butorac is retired from the ATP Tour but recently succeeded Roger Federer as President of the ATP Player's Council. He is now the Vice President of Player Relations and Operations of the US Open.
At the event, Butorac delivered a keynote speech and answered questions during the awards ceremony. He also participated on the court throughout the day.
The next event for Silicon Alley Sports is the Silicon Alley Golf Invitational, which will be publicly announced soon. It will be held on September 5 at the historically significant Saint Andrews Golf Club – the oldest golf club in the United States.
